A word from the Mayor

Welcome to Shediac

On behalf of all the citizens of Shediac, I would like to welcome you to «THE LOBSTER CAPITAL OF THE WORLD».

Situated on the Northumberland Strait, off the Atlantic Ocean, Shediac is bordered to the east by Prince Edward Island and to the south by Nova Scotia. This seaside community lies just fifteen minutes from Metropolitan Moncton, New Brunswick's largest retail centre. Our sandy beaches are renown for their beauty and their cleanliness but most importantly for the warmest seawater north of the Carolinas.

Shediac is recognized as a tourist destination "par excellence" and its citizens are famous for their hospitality. The Shediac area attracts many thousands of visitors each year. At the entrance of our municipality sits a giant lobster sculpture that bears witness to our slogan «THE LOBSTER CAPITAL OF THE WORLD». Tourists flock to the site annually to photograph the mammoth monument or to be photographed with it.

Incorporated in 1903, Shediac is ever growing and prospering. Visitors are impressed by its charm and beauty, by its family oriented character and by the courteousness of its residents. A great place to live! This community which has known a remarkable past and history is now experiencing a significant building boom. Shediac has all the ingredients needed to attract people to establish here and to do business here.

We are tremendously proud of the bilingual nature of our municipality. More importantly, we are very proud of the fact that the two founding peoples have lived in harmony for over 100 years. Our Acadian heritage gives our town its own particular charm.

We invite you to visit the historical home of the first Acadian politician appointed to the Senate, Senator Pascal Poirier. Or to take a look at the old CN station where passengers boarded and disembarked from the first passenger railway line in the Maritimes. Come to savour the delicious seafood served in quality restaurants. Come discover the many beauties of our community. But above all, come discover for yourselves the warmth and friendliness of our people.

To the citizens of Shediac, to the merchants who do business in our community and to all those others who had a hand in the success of Shediac, I would like to express my sincere appreciation for the part that you played in making our town what it is today. I am always at your disposal if you should need assistance. To all the visitors to Shediac, I bid you a hearty welcome and a memorable stay!
